Myanmar's foreign minister says the death toll in his country following a devastating cyclone could top 10,000. Tropical Cyclone Nargis struck the Southeast Asian nation - also known as Burma - Saturday with winds up to 120 miles per hour.
Some have criticized the government for its lack of adequate warning. Myanmar does not have an adequate disaster warning system; many rural homes and buildings are constructed of thatch, bamboo and other materials that succumb easily to violent storms.
The radio station broadcasting from the country's capital, Naypyitaw, said 3,939 people had been killed. Another 2,879 people were unaccounted for in a single town, Bogalay.
Foreign Minister Nyan Win, however, told diplomats based in Yangon that the death toll could rise to more than 10,000 in the Irrawaddy delta, a low-lying region of the country.
